READING AT RMPA

We place a very high priority on the teaching of reading at RMPA.

Reading is an essential skill and we are committed to enabling our children to have a love of reading and independence in their learning. The foundations of teaching children to read begins from the moment they arrive at our school and are built upon throughout their primary education, equipping them for life in secondary school and beyond. It is our intention to ensure that all pupils are able to read fluently and with confidence so that they are able to access important knowledge across the whole curriculum. We therefore encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction in order to:

  • develop knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live
  • establish an appreciation and love of reading
  • develop comprehension skills

Recommended Reads!

Our specially curated list of ‘recommended reads’ has been put together to encourage children to read a wide range of texts. These lists are evaluated and updated each year in collaboration with other Redhill Trust primary schools.

Events and activities to encourage and support reading

  • Second hand book sales and book swaps.
  • Visits from authors.
  • Reader of the week, where children are rewarded with books for showing a passion for reading.
  • A “Bag A Book” goes home with a child once a week. This contains a book to share and enjoy with your family, some helpful hints for parents, a bookmark and some hot chocolate to make reading time really special.
  • DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) happens in classrooms every day. This may include a class story, some quiet reading time or some book talk where children share their reviews of books they have read.
  • We take part in several reading events across Redhill Trust each year. These include The Redhill Book Awards, The Primary Reading Quiz, Dreadlock Alien and the Poetry by Heart Competition for Year 6 children.
  • Shakespeare Week is held in the Spring Term every year. This involves a full week of learning activities based on the works of our most famous play-write.
  • Every child receives a book at Christmas.
  • Visits to the local library.
